FIRST E&P: Introducing Our Inaugural 2024 Sustainability Report

FIRST Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited (FIRST E&P) is pleased to release its inaugural 2024 Sustainability Report, marking a major milestone the company’s journey toward responsible, resilient energy leadership.

The report highlights a 96% reduction in routine gas flaring at the company’s Anyala and Madu fields one of the most significant environmental performance improvements by any Nigerian oil producer. It also records an 15% year-on-year increase in crude oil production to 47.76 Kilo Barrels of Oil Per Day, demonstrating that operational growth and environmental responsibility can go hand-in-hand.

Net-Zero Strategy: Bold Targets for a Sustainable Future

FIRST E&P has committed to an ambitious Net-Zero Emissions Strategy, targeting carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2045, and Scope 3 by 2060. Aligned with Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan and the Paris Agreement, the strategy uses 2021 as its emissions baseline and aims for Low-Carbon status by 2030. It is underpinned by internationally recognised methodologies from the IPCC and the GHG Protocol and includes structured risk assessment and scenario analysis aligned with the TCFD framework.

Delivering Real Environmental Impact 

The near elimination of routine gas flaring was achieved through the NNPC Ltd/FIRST E&P Joint Venture, highlighting the power of strategic partnerships in tackling complex environmental challenges.

In addition to this milestone, FIRST E&P:

  • Achieved 8.59 million Lost Time Injury-free man-hours
  • Launched a comprehensive Carbon Footprint Management Plan
  • Formed a reforestation and carbon sequestration partnership with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation focused on Nigeria’s coastal communities

Transforming Communities Through Strategic Investment

Beyond compliance, FIRST E&P's commitment to social impact is anchored in long-term partnerships with host communities. With zero community disruption since the start of operations in 2012 and statutory contributions to the it’s Host Communities Development Trust Fund, the company continues to invest in health, education, and economic empowerment to build thriving communities.

Healthcare: Expanding Access and Saving Lives

Underserved communities. Key highlights include:

  • $1.5 million grant to the Healthy Heart Foundation for life-saving surgeries via First Cardiology Consultants
  • Access to clean water for over 15,000 residents through four major infrastructure projects

Education: Equipping the Next Generation

The company is committed to building human capital and improving learning outcomes in its host communities:

  • 40 scholarships awarded
  • 72 teachers employed
  • 200 EdTech devices distributed
  • 8 schools upgraded through the IDP Education Support Project

  • Over $700 million spent on Nigerian contractors
